Karen is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. With over 25 years of experience as an EMT, ER, ICU and flight nurse, Karen's experiences in these roles came with a great personal cost, as any nurse or responder can relate to. She realized that there was a need for both culturally relevant and competent mental health care, where responders could get help from someone who understands the lifestyle and demands of responder life, and the impact it has. This ignited a fire and a passion for treating first responders and their families. She became a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC), and together with her husband, founded ReThink Mental Health and Wellness.
She enjoys teaching, especially peer support trainings for several local police, fire, and EMS, agencies. She also lectures for paramedic and nursing students sharing lessons she has learned in her career and how to avoid and overcome secondary trauma. She leads a secondary trauma and resiliency course on occasion with a local non-profit. She is also certified in weight loss medicine and peptide therapy and aims to treat mental health as whole-health and takes an individualized, person-centered approach to care.
She is married to a Police Officer and has two grown boys. She loves music, the outdoors, and is an avid big game hunter. Her pup Lilly also joins her at the office every day.
Tate is an Integrative Psychiatric- Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 35 years of varied nursing experience. Her professional life has been spent in emergency/critical care settings, with nearly two decades spent in helicopter EMS/critical care transport as a flight nurse. She is a Colorado native who cherishes her family (including the quadrupeds), being in the mountains, new adventures, creating art, and pouring love and positivity into others.
Working in emergency services, one is guaranteed to experience the downstream effects of this uniquely stressful profession. Loss of friends and colleagues to suicide, insidious erosion of mental, physical, and spiritual health, and the all- too-common deterioration of marital and family relations are among the by-products. Tate’s decision to “tend to her tribe”, was born out of a humble recognition that even heroes become broken. And they need to be taught the courage to ask for help. Having walked the walk, Tate brings a warm, funny, compassionate, and open spirit to her care.
Not happy with the standard psychiatric model, Tate has sought out extensive education in integrative psychiatry. Working with Tate gives clients the opportunity to explore a deeper, more personalized, and holistic approach to their mental health and wellness.
Erin is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 15 years of nursing experience working with military members and their families, as well as Veterans. As a Navy Veteran herself, Erin has a passion for serving those who serve our country and community. She believes in a holistic approach to mental wellness, recognizing that resilience and healing aren’t attained with a one-size-fits-all treatment plan, but rather one that has been tailored to each individual’s unique desires, needs, and often age. Erin also enjoys supporting and caring for young children and older adults. Because of her current and past experience in the Navy, she understands the intricacies of caring for those, and the families of those, that serve, as well as first responders.
Erin was born and raised in Arizona and lived all over the country during her nearly 12 years of active-duty service. Now in Colorado, she remains a member of the United States Navy Reserves. Erin is also married to a Navy Veteran, with whom she shares two children and two dogs. She enjoys spending time with her family, listening to true crime podcasts, gardening and crafting.
Shelly is the front line of ReThink Mental Health and Wellness. She is a Virginia native, who moved to Colorado in 2022 with her husband. We couldn't be happier that she did! She loves interacting with people and learning new things, and you will undoubtedly experience her contagious joy and warm smile when you meet her.
The mental health and the wellness of responders, our military, and their families has been a long-standing passion of hers, which makes her a perfect (and the most important) part of our team. She is married to a wonderful guy who served our country as a Naval Nuclear Engineer in the United States Navy. They have one grown child, and two very special (and beyond adorable!) grandbabies. They both love Colorado, even with the cold and snow, as she is definitely a beach person!
Prior to moving to Colorado and joining our team at ReThink, she was in Pediatrics for 19 years. Helping others is undoubtedly her calling.
"I am so excited for the opportunity to help others. In my spare time, I love to visit our grandbabies in California and spend time with the hubby. Last, but not least, I love going to church and loving people to Jesus."
Lilly is ReThink Mental Health and Wellness' resident therapy dog in training. She is certain that she is actually the Office Manager, door greeter, couch warmer, and generally in charge of all things. She eagerly working through her service dog training and certification. During your appointment, you will likely meet her in our waiting room with one of her stuffed animals or patrolling the halls looking for someone to give hugs and kisses to! She will frequently present her toys to you as a friendship gesture when you arrive and loves to play! She joins Karen during client sessions and helps provide stress relief and comfort to clients. She especially loves to give hugs with her fluffy paws. She has the gift of "lying puppy dog eyes", which she uses to make others believe she is in need of food and lacking attention. We assure you, she is fed and spoiled, so don't believe her! In her free time, she also protects the building and its inhabitants from birds, bunnies, and squirrels and will gladly chase them when allowed.
Emily is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner intern, who is set to graduate in October 2024. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University and is currently completing a Master of Science in Psychiatry at Chamberlain University. She has ten years of nursing experience working primarily in the Intensive Care Unit throughout Colorado and has also worked throughout New England (from where she hails).
She is very passionate about supporting patients with their mental health throughout all stages of their health care journey. It is important to Emily to work collaboratively with clients to provide them with individualized and holistic care in support of achieving overall wellbeing, including incorporation of nutrition education and guidance into her treatment plans. This aligns with her approach to patient care, which comes from an integrative perspective. An integrative approach looks at the whole patient versus symptom management only. To expand her expertise in integrative psychiatry, she has obtained extensive education outside of her formal training. This includes Leslie Korn’s Nutritional and Integrative Medicine certification course. Additionally, she is currently enrolled in the Psychiatry Redefined: Functional Medicine Fellowship Program and the Integrative Psychiatry Institute Fellowship Program.
She resides in Denver with her husband and dog, Molly. In her spare time, she loves skiing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, running, paddleboarding, gardening, and cooking.
